Three herds of American bison (Bison bison) can be found in Arizona: the Grand Canyon herd on the Kaibab Plateau, managed by the National Park Service, and the Raymond Wildlife Area (pictured here) and House Rock Wildlife Area herds, managed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. The large animals, which thrive on a diet of prairie grasses and woody plants, are the largest mammals in North America and can weigh up to a ton. Perhaps even more impressive? The beasts can reach speeds of up to 40 mph, the same top speed as coyotes.
