Find Your Space in Marana, Arizona
South of Phoenix and just northwest of Tucson, Marana offers a quieter way to experience the Sonoran Desert. Wide-open landscapes, mountain trails and cactus-filled preserves create room to walk, hike and explore at your own pace, away from some of Southern Arizona’s busiest trailheads.
Hike the Tortolita Mountains
The Wild Burro Trail is a 6.8-mile loop through the Tortolita Mountains, pairing sweeping desert scenery with glimpses of the area’s human history, including ancient petroglyphs and old homestead remains. The trailhead is conveniently located near The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain, making it easy to move from resort comforts to a much quieter stretch of Sonoran Desert.
Nearby, the Tortolita Preserve offers 2,400 acres of gently sloping desert for walking, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, birding and nature photography. The full loop is about 9 miles, with a shorter 5.4-mile option
Take the Quieter Path at Sanctuary Cove
Near Interstate 10 in Southern Marana, Sanctuary Cove offers easy walking trails, views of the Tucson Mountains, a meditation chapel and a labyrinth. Its gentle terrain makes it an inviting choice for families or anyone looking for a more relaxed desert experience.
Find Solitude in Ironwood Forest
For a more remote experience, Ironwood Forest National Monument protects 129,000 acres of Sonoran Desert filled with ironwood trees, wildlife and thousands of saguaros. One of its most remarkable sights is an enormous 80-armed saguaro known as “Shiva”.
Visitors exploring beyond the easier-access areas should allow at least half a day, consider a high-clearance vehicle and download a map in advance, as cell service can be limited.
Explore a Forest of Saguaros
Saguaro National Park West is an easy day trip from Marana. Begin at the Red Hills Visitor Center, then drive, hike, picnic or simply take in a landscape filled with the cactus that has come to symbolize Southern Arizona.
However you choose to explore, Marana offers something increasingly valuable: room to slow down, look around and experience the desert on your own terms.
