Arizona State Parks

The Arizona State Parks department welcomes visitors from around the world to the 27 State Parks which feature camping (RV, tent, trailer) and many activities within the parks such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, walking, fishing, boating, birding and other unique outdoor sports. Kartchner Caverns State Park in southern Arizona is a world class cave with campgrounds, hiking trails and a Discovery Center to learn about caves.

Other programming within the agency include the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)  that manages historic and cultural programs for the State such as the “Main Street Program.”  Each March the SHPO features the Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Month with cultural programs throughout the state. In 2014 the Exposition will be at Catalina State Park in Tucson on March 29, 2014 . The Expo will provide special opportunities for visitors to learn more about why it is important to preserve archaeological sites and historic places, and how archaeologists historians and tribal members preserve the prehistory and history of Arizona.   

The Off-highway Vehicle program includes recreational activities in pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles, four-wheel drive vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes, dune buggies, sand rails and snowmobiles which offer many ways to get out and see the State. The Arizona State Parks website highlights all the groups and maps you need to enjoy exploring Arizona’s backcountry.

There are more than 700 hiking trails in the State Trails system. These trails are recommended as top trails and best opportunities for hikers across the State.  There is a complete set of four hiking books for sale in the State Parks headquarters that feature each trail in the system.
