Carrie Schnepf’s vintage trailer obsession started with a 1970 Silver Streak. She bought it from a couple in Phoenix, thinking she would use it as yard art. But then, she decided to restore the aluminum luxury liner to its original condition.

“The process was way more fun than I expected,” says Schnepf — who, along with her husband, Mark, owns and manages Schnepf Farms in Queen Creek. She spent eight months taking the trailer apart and putting it back together, meticulously preserving the period appliances, cabinetry and fixtures. Next, she bought two 1969 Airstreams in “disgusting” condition, along with a 1955 Terry Pullman Train. Schnepf fully restored all of them, and the farm’s Cozy Peach lodging business came to life in the Sonoran Desert.

Now featuring nine renovated campers — from a 1948 Spartan Manor to a 1974 Silver Streak — the Cozy Peach offers a “glamping” experience that’s a throwback to a previous era, but with modern comforts such as a microwave, a Keurig coffee maker and a memory foam mattress. The spotless trailers are decorated with handmade curtains and reupholstered furniture from the period when each camper was built.

Schnepf preserved the opulent bathrooms — a signature feature during the Airstream luxury era — but there’s no off-the-grid aspect to this brand of lodging: The trailers are all hooked into the farm’s electrical, water and sewer systems. Every camper also has a flat-screen TV.

“Whenever people check in, I tell them the story of that particular trailer,” Schnepf says. Some of the trailers were abandoned on ranches; others were lovingly cared for by their original owners.

Guests at the Cozy Peach also are treated to the many benefits of farm life. The trailers sit in the middle of a working farm that’s been in the Schnepf family for four generations. This oasis in a sea of suburbia is home to the largest organic peach orchard in Arizona. It also contains organic vegetable gardens, a bakery, a vineyard and cornfields. Guests can ride vintage cruiser bikes around the farm, and in February, the peach trees are full of pink blossoms.

The setting is perfect for watching the sunset over the San Tan Mountains while enjoying a farm-to-table dinner. A hot breakfast of pancakes or French toast can also be brought right to your trailer door the next morning.

And don’t worry if all of the Cozy Peach’s trailers are booked. Schnepf just bought three more, and they’ll be in perfect vintage condition soon.
