Most Arizonans will recognize the buzz that rises from trees in late spring and early summer — the call of the cicadas. Apache cicadas, scientific name Diceroprocta apache, are adults for only about two months, during which time they reproduce. They spend the rest of their lives as nymphs underground. The most famous cicadas, in the genus Magicicada, live for 13 or 17 years, but Apache cicadas have a more modest life span of two to three years. They buzz by vibrating membranes on their abdomens.
