“LeRoy [DeJolie] is an amazing teacher. He actually teaches every minute that he is in the field. He does NOT bring his camera and tripod to do his own shooting. He is constantly giving and seeking feedback on the shooting situation and ensures that everyone is on the same page with the appropriate camera settings. He ensures that the image is exactly what it should be. I can't say enough good things about his teaching skills and personality.” — Doris T.

Digital cameras have made photography ubiquitous. Just about anyone with a smartphone can take a photograph. But to make a photograph, as Ansel Adams said, you need vision, storytelling ability and, of course, technical expertise. The men and women who contribute to Arizona Highways possess all of the above. What’s more, they are among the most respected photographers in the world.

At Arizona Highways PhotoScapes (AHPS), our sister organization, those talented photographers lead hands-on workshops all around the world. PhotoScapes, as we like to call it, officially is known as The Friends of Arizona Highways Magazine Foundation. It’s a 501(c)3 non-profit that was founded in 1985 by then-publisher Hugh Harelson to showcase the beauty, culture and history of our great state through photographic education.

In the four decades since, AHPS has offered instruction to all levels of photographers. Unlike other photography tours, PhotoScapes is education focused. Whether it’s in the classroom or in the field, workshop attendees receive hands-on learning in both the technical and creative foundations of photography. And most importantly, the instructors at AHPS are passionate about teaching and sharing their expertise with students.

Arizona Highways PhotoScapes offers a vast array of workshops focused on landscape, wildlife and macro photography — there’s something for everyone. Check out these incredible Arizona-based workshops:
