If you're looking for a unique way to honor a special family member, adopting a highway in their name may be the answer.

The Arizona Department of Transportation's Adopt a Highway Program lets you "adopt" a 2-mile stretch of highway. You are then responsible for picking up litter along that stretch at least once a year. The goal is to clean up the area three times or more a year, but once a year is the minimum.

ADOT posts signs with the name of the person or group you choose, showing that you have adopted that section. For those who are participating to honor someone's memory, the signs can say "in memory of" or "in honor of."
