Flying E Ranch was established in 1946, but three years later, a coin flip changed its destiny. California residents George and Vi Wellik were on their way to Phoenix when they saw the ranch from their private plane. “Looks like a motel in the middle of the desert,” Vi said. At the end of their stay in Phoenix, the Welliks flipped a coin to decide whether they would visit the Flying E or continue on to Texas.

The rest is history: By 1952, the Welliks owned the ranch, which is located near the famous Vulture Mine. Today, people come for relaxation and a taste of the ranching lifestyle. The Flying E’s family-style meals are legendary, and its rooms are rustic and comfortable. But if you visit, make sure you experience one of the two-hour horseback rides, which are guided by real-life cowboys and cowgirls. You can even borrow a hat and boots if you don’t have your own — unlike George and Vi Wellik, the Flying E leaves nothing to chance.
