Sedona’s A Sunset Chateau has been a family affair for more than 20 years. Owners Janet and Philippe Buillet met in Paris as painters and sculptors, then were inspired to move to Arizona, where they spent nearly two decades renovating and pouring their creativity into their property. Their son, Jean-Christophe, was the B&B’s chef and now is its general manager.
The property’s origins are rooted in what Janet describes as a series of spiritual encounters and divine directions. “Honestly, I kept getting this sense I’m supposed to do a hotel,” she says. But she doesn’t want it to feel like a hotel: “I want you to feel like you’re home.”
Philippe handled construction. Janet painted murals, instead of buying art. And Jean-Christophe tackled the electrical work and plumbing. Janet says every aspect of their property, including the food and service, remains a “labor of love” in which she and her family ensure the experience is never mediocre.
That starts with the 25 uniquely decorated and designed suites, each of which showcases original artwork. And it extends to the kinds of amenities the Buillets appreciate when they travel, such as organic soaps and shampoos, a freshly prepared breakfast each morning, and a comfortable and cozy stay.
Outdoor amenities include serene gardens with panoramic views of Sedona’s red rock formations. Guests can enjoy a dip in the pool or stargazing beside the fire pit. “A lot of people will say, ‘This feels like it’s a piece of heaven here — it’s very peaceful,’ Janet says. “I say, ‘Yes, exactly. God is here.’ ”
Guests can also make a spiritual connection in their picturesque surroundings. Beginning at the B&B are several trails, including the Airport Mesa Loop, a moderate hike that passes a purported vortex site.
“I take the time to just listen and be present with people,” Janet says. “I want guests to leave the Chateau feeling healed.”
Staying at A Sunset Chateau, she adds, is like finding an oasis in a desert. And she hopes the B&B has become a place where the beauty of the surroundings mirrors a deeper, and spiritual, rest for the soul.
